Journal assignment - Article Example These are major concerns of Ingrid in her series of videos on â€Å"Women of Muslim† and their roles in the society. One of the major concerns of Ingrid is the role of women in leadership position in the Islamic community. She points out that women in the Islamic society have been discriminated by being denied the chance to participate in the leadership position. She feels that the major reason why the role of women does not go beyond the domestic capacity is because they have no channels to air their cries to the world. Their participation in leadership is suppressed by a culture that regards men in the society as the superior beings who should take up all the top positions in the society as women take a basic role to serve and to adore men in the society (Ingridi). She points out that this is the principle reason why women in the Islamic community have remained static as women in all other regions of the world remain dynamic and disentangle themselves from the power of male chauvinism. One particular position that she pinpoints is the discrimination of church in religious worship. In this society, women serve as the congregation but cannot preach or even participate in leadership positions. In essence, they are an inferior lot and their basic position is to serve and to listen (Bennett 42). On the contrary, women in the Christian religion in regions such as US have been empowered and can take part in officiating mass, a role that Muslim women only dream about. The most touching idea of Ingrid is the fact that women in this society have always been ready to take these positions but have been denied. As a matter of fact, numerous ladies have embraced change and have even engaged in theology classes and yet have no place to serve. In her opinion, giving the woman a position in the society will allow the woman to serve the community and to salvage the position of women in the society. The words of Ingrid Mattson are to a great extent convincing as well as controversial in the society today. Loewenstein (1) is among the authors who have reacted to a group of videos that have circulated in the public regarding the position of women in the typical Islamic community. Although the war against women discrimination has been fought persistently in the contemporary society, few women have come up to fight for women in the Muslim society. As a matter of fact, the community has suppressed the voices of women and their opportunity to express their grievances seems not to have arrived yet. Ingrid, being a leader among the North American Muslim, is one of the bravest women in history who have stood out to assert on the position of women in the American society. This position has empowered her to come out as a female activist to assert on the rights of women in the society. In the western society, there is a notable religious empowerment of the Muslim women. Karim (218) and Bano and Kalmbach (323) have expressed the absorption of women in western M uslim culture as they climb the ladder to serve as leaders in the mosques. The increasing number of Islams women in leadership in America can be associated with the empowerment they have received from their fellow women. As more women take up more leadership positions, they empower other women to join in the cadre. Critical Analysis of A Mother in Dubliners Essay In the short story, A Mother, James Joyce highlights four different aspects: Theme, Style, Language used, and the Characteristics of the Characters. There are five different themes highlighted in the story. The first one is Paralysis, which is the central theme for all the stories in Dubliners. In this story, paralysis is shown with the storys main character, Mrs. Kearney, who is constantly relying and depending on her daughter, providing her with a very good education and making her follow a career in music. Paralysis could also be seen with Kathleen Kearney, who was forced by her mother to follow a musical career, and the way some people eventually say that she has no future in music whatsoever. The second theme, marriage, deals with the way it is portrayed in a negative way. Mrs. Kearney got married out of spite, and there isnt much romance in the relationship between her and her husband, although this doesnt suggest that she has completely given up her romantic ideas. This is to do with how Mrs. Kearney keeps on bragging to her friends that her husband is taking her and her daughter to Skerries and they spend their money on Kathleens education and music lessons, to help prepare her for the concerts. Another aspect that highlights this theme s Ms. Kearnys use of language, which is that of an upper class, and this shows that she received an education that was as good as her daughters. The fourth theme is culture and religion. Certain aspects of culture are highlighted when we are told about the grand concerts, which are part of the Irish revival. Also, we see the way the Irish language is kept alive, like the way Mrs. Kearney and her friends say good-bye in Irish. As for religion, we find out that Mr. Kearney was very religious and he often went to church by himself. The final theme is materialism. This is to do with the way Mrs. Kearney is opportunistic, and how she is persistent with her daughter receiving money for all her performances. Joyce uses a satirical writing style in this story. This means that he is making fun of the characters indirectly/subtly. For example, the narrator refers to the concerts as grand, when in reality they are a failure, and the way Mr. Holohans friends call him Happy Holohan. Also, the way he refers to the artists in the concert as artistes. Another aspect of Joyces style is impressionism. This is to do with how the narrator just tells us about the story (gives us a feedback) without revealing anything to us. For example, the narrator tells us the story through the way he sees it. He does not state his opinion, but instead he leaves us with what information we received from him to come up with our own conclusions of the characters. Naturalism is another aspect of Joyces style. He uses real places and real names in the story to give the reader a sense of place. The language Joyce assigned to the narrator is simple and flamboyant. For example, People said she was very clever, a very nice girl and a believer in the language movement (p. 155). There are two forms of language spoken by the narrator: Speaking about the characters and providing information (Miss Devlin had become Mrs. Kearney out of spite She was educated in high-class convent ), and speaking on behalf of the characters (People said she was a very nice girl ). When reading the story, we reach a few conclusions about the characters. Mrs. Kearney is revealed as a snob, conceited woman living in middle-class Dublin, and received a high-class education. We see that she has a harsh and cold attitude (Her ivory manners were admired She sat among the chilly circle of her accomplishments). Mr. Kearny is a pious and sober man, he does not have a romantic relationship with his wife (not enough love), but he is always there to help and support his wife. Mr. Fitzpatrick represents the negative side of the male characters. Because of him, the concert ended in failure. In this story, Joyce has highlighted many aspects, ranging from themes to style, and he elaborated on them with detail, which helps the reader understand the way he portrays real life in Dublin.

Approaches to Adult Learning Annotated Overview The focus of this writing will be on the themes of the assigned chapter readings for Week 6. These chapter reading from Learning in Adulthood: A Comprehensive Guide was in the following chapters: 8, 9, and 10. This paper will also include additional learning resources (media video and instructors notes) and will outline points of interests gained from their viewing and reading. Week 5 Annotated Chapter Assignment This weeks study involved our reading of three chapters, viewing two media videos and article reading. This paper will touch on the points of interest that resonated with me in my reading as well as thoughts that I explored from the supportive learning resources (media video and instructors notes). The paper will conclude with a summary/discussion of what was gained through this learning experience and discuss ways this learning can be implemented. Understanding and Facilitating Adult Learning: A Comprehensive Approach Chapter 8 Theme The overall theme of this chapter highlighted an integrated approach to learning which shows the synergistic connection and combination of the mind, body, and spirit in learning called embodied learning. It also discussed the significance of learning through storytelling and heightened learning outcomes of narrative teaching. This section will address the points of interests that inspired to onto further study. Narrative Learning There are events that happen in our life which are unique. Some are uniquely dull and some can be uniquely exciting. However, the case each has a unique storyline that when told can help others to better understand and know something of the storytellers world that may lead to a significant discovery in their own. The writer points out that Narrative knowing are not so much driven to find out more about the tangible outcomes of an event: its facts, logic and such, than they are about discovering meaning, and gaining understanding of the same event (Merriam, Baumgartner, Caffarella, 2007). Narrative Learning Formats. The writer pointed out that that narratives as a conduit for learning comes in three distinct formats which are storying the curriculum, storytelling, and autobiography (Merriam et al., 2007). Overall as Foote points out the stories told through narrative learning be it a story with connotations that are based on culture, tradition, social or spiritual implications each has been in its unique way the means of knowledge impartation since time began (Foote, 2015). Educationally, storytelling provides the presenter with a powerful means of helping the learner to make salient connections which improves the learning experience. Narrative Learning, Adult Development, Transformational Learning. I appreciated what the writer stated concerning life narratives being a retrospective activity that is continually in the process of revealing itself unfolding. For when one views life from a narrative perspective the result leads to empowerment. This happens because its not what happens to anyone that matters it how the event it translated that matters (Merriam et al., 2007). My thoughts are, re-storying based that is devoid of the positives found even in the most negative of situations seriously retards ones transformative development. Nemec says that in stating that a transformation which shifts one perspective is not always easy because there is a cause for disequilibrium in ones life. However, if one chooses to, one can regain a new balance in life from what is learned through that life experience by changings ones perspective of the issue at hand (Nemec, 2012). Chapter 9 Theme The theme of this chapter encourages one to take on the perspective of learning and knowing by using lenses of no-westerners. In this way one is better suited to understand the dynamics of the meaning of ones learning and knowing is based solely by the beholder and not on ones location. This section will address the points of interests concerning which I found to be enlightening The Western/Non-Western Dichotomy, Culture, and Indigenous Knowledge According to the writer in order to fully appreciate the differences in western and nonwestern learning and knowledge one must take in deliberation the following perceptions: Western versus non-Western, culture and indigenous knowledge (Merriam et al., 2007). Western/Non-Western Dichotomy. According to Merriam, many non-westerners do not accept the false narrative typically held by some in the west concerning the promotion of the assumption that westerners learning and knowledge is superior to all others (Merriam et al., 2007). The cited writer points out that what is thought of as western knowledge is often traced to classical Greek culture (Paul Pedersen, 1980). Culture. Merriam points that culture can be defined as a representational manifestation of the shared behavior and meaning held by a same group of people (Merriam et al., 2007). Cultures from East Asians are known for their renowned ability to pay attention on a global and local level. In comparison to their western counterparts, the west is no match. A plausible reason for that is in how each culture implicitly obtains diverse knowledge and process the information. (Qiufang Fu, Zoltan Dienes, Junchen Shang, Xiaolan Fu, 2013). Indigenous Knowledge. Cultural knowledge and learning is that which is shared within a group. Analogous to that definition is indigenous knowledge but on a larger scale. This is knowledge that is known as local knowledge that is generated and shared, by a group of people, over a period but within a specific geographic and historic region. This is knowledge is community-based and supported knowledge that deals directly with local issues within the region for the betterment of the community(Merriam et al., 2007). Chapter 10 Theme The theme of this chapter looks at learning from the context of learning taking place on a more global perspective within society. The chapter looked at the working of power and various other learning themes. This section will touch on aspects that I found interesting. Critical Theory and Adult Learning According to Merriam, when one compares andragogy and transformational learning, are unaware of the potential that lies within the potentially of critical theory potential. The vastness of topic of this theory surrounding adult learning, lends itself to further examination of the concepts that impact adult education. I found the following to be interesting reads: reflective discourse and the seven learning tasks involved with critical theory. Ideal Conditions for Reflective Discourse. Merriam cites Habermas stating that as a form a form of knowledge Habermass ideal conditions for reflective discourse, closely resembles it. The forms of knowledge being technical, practical and emancipatory knowledge(Merriam et al., 2007). Merriam goes on to state that according to Mezirow, when two are in discussion if there is no doubting the authenticity of what is being shared or the truthfulness of the speaker, or how appropriate the information is in light of relevant norms, one is prone to seek the best judgment of one that is judged to be informed, objective, and rational (Merriam et al., 2007) Critical Thinking. Merriam states that because lifeworld and the system interconnect it would behoove one to critically focus ones attention on the concerted workings of the two. Merriam goes on to quote Collins (1995) stating that, The juxtaposition of lifeworld and system concepts is clearly significant in enabling us to think deeply and realistically about the systemic blockages to the achievement of a more fully democratized society' (Merriam et al., 2007). Bohman and Rehg (2014) point out that Habermass criteria there are four conditions when applied to interactions of discourse between adults that are at play that would result in authentic discussion. They go on to state that crux of Habermass Theory of Discourse is expression of valid facts and information that is based purely on the merits of a disinterested pursuit of truth (Bohman Rehg, 2014). This holds true in an any interchange involving rational adults who are sharing truth from a level personal knowledge and understanding while at the same time seeking mutuality of understanding and knowledge. Integrating the main themes The chapter readings for week six gave me a better sense of self-involvement in learning. Whereas the tone of week five reading was on the role of facilitation in the learning process; the implications in the statement of one being personally involved in learning was spoken loud and clear throughout week six chapters. In reflecting on the theories and principles of transformative learning I can say that one of the enlightenments that I take away is through the means that transformative learning, ones internal and external awareness is enhanced within that transformative learning experience. What I mean by that is, I learned that learning is more than just sitting in a room assimilating data. Cohen points out, that when one embodies the learning the learning experience, there is an opportunity created where any portion of the information being received can connect with meaning that initiates ones conscious awareness that brings about a reflective moment which ushers in a revelation of ones higher self. Transparently speaking, this reading brought up some thoughts that I had not previously considered. Consequently, these three eye-opening chapters demand a deeper review and reflection on my part, if for nothing else than for the sake of growth through perspective changing and social enlightenment, which is the message I felt the writer was conveying within these three chapters. Incorporating Media and Instructor Notes The video, New Approach to Learning was an expose on the creator of Khan Academy. He is a former Hedge Fund analysis who started a free on line e-learning you tube website. This is a unique approach to sharing information with others that assister the self-directed learner supporting their ongoing learning settings. The presenter points out that his approach is simple and effective and attracts the attention of youth and adult learners around the world. The benefit of this approach to learning is that the learner can have ready access for a variety of learning event while learning at their pace. Mr. Khan points out that according to research information the length of the content is at the right amount that facilities learning. The presenter also brought in a interviewee who expressed how this type of learning is a valuable asset to locations around the world that may not have access to any formal or informal means of education (Vantage Siam Co., 2011). The video, Gen Y New Approaches to Learning Training was interview centered on Generation Y and their approach to learning. The interviewee pointed out the demographic range of this new type of learner and the desires of the Gen Y group of learners to be taught in accordance to the technological society we live in. They want to be free in their ability to use the knowledge with the technology they have grown up with as compared to previous generations who did not have similar types of access. Both the interviewer and interviewee agreed that the responsibility of the teacher is to move away from former methods to incorporate this new desire for learning by making it easy for student involvement and encourages participation. This move will not only affect the present generation but it will prepare them for the upcoming one Gen Z.(Award1956s channel, 2010). The video, Koren Alberich on New Approaches to Learning was interview on three examples of learning using alternate reality games and virtual worlds. The interviewee explained how the games and worlds can be made to adapt to any environment and setting. Each can be structured to simulate desired learning outcomes. Two salient outcomes of these new approaches are: 1) the scalability. The environments and settings can meet any size of learning audience, 2) as for the use of virtual worlds they can be create real-time global location via internet that can bring global locations into one location (Clarey, 2011) Conclusion The overall thought of this weeks lesson has been an approach to learning that has helped me in synthesizing my life to what has been presented within these three chapters, as well to the previous lessons. Subjects like the principles of embodied learning with its lesson on spiritual and narrative learning are very insightful. I am a Pastor of a small congregation and I teach using the preaching method of expository preaching. After reading about narrative learning I have added storytelling as an element of preaching to help the listener gain a richer understanding of the content of my message. This is one example of how I have applied what I am learning. I believe that knowing and not applying what one knows means that knowledge remains as theoretical information. However, when that same knowledge is put into action then it takes on another essence, by becoming reality in the life of the one that has applied it. As I further reflect on what take away from the chapter dealing with Le arning and knowing I now look at with I know and have learned through new lenses. Taking others perspectives, especially other cultures, will be hard to do. That is if one is not willing to, at the least, empathetically look at life from someone elses perspective. I agree with the chapter writer concerning our western egotism when it comes to learning that inders us in that aspect. Our pride should not be the thing that keeps us from learning and knowing from other cultures. The truth is, in many cases other cultures have truly learned and know more than our does. Any barrier to intellectual growth must be overcome if we as a whole world round if we are to grow together. And as barriers, such as cultural pride and others come down that gives way to areas of growth in realms such as meaningful dialog brought about by the ethos of critical theory, as well as acceptance of ideals founded in postmodern and feminist perspectives. When approached with a mindset of open-mindedness, these theories and concepts are enlightening and the means of growth. Light makes things grow. Needless to say, I feel I have grown to have a deeper appreciation for what I have experienced thus far and look forward to what more is to come. advertisng vs, graphic design :: essays research papers

There is one thing for certain I know, when I think about what I’m going to do when I get out of school and it consists of getting a job. Another thing I know for sure is that I want to go into graphic design and stay away from advertising. My degree is going to be in Advertising and Graphic Design but I think I want to stay away from the advertising and do the designing. Designing is something that I enjoy doing and hopefully I can find a job that makes me happy doing what I like. I decided to stay away from advertising because of a lot of reasons really. The first reason would be I have a hard time coming up with a concept with legs. The kind of concept that can go on, and on forever. It seems to me that all the great ides I get only have one great ad and that’s it, it’s done. I also want to stay away from advertising because, it’s a really ruthless game, come up with a great idea or basically you’re not going to have a job. I’m going to need to go in to a career that has a little more job stability. Knowing that I’m going to have a job always makes me feel better. Another reason I want to stay away from advertising is that you have short deadlines and extreme pressure to get things done in such a fast past. That’s all good and fine but I want to be able to take time on some projects that need it and move fast on the projects that don’t need a lot of time. I don’t mind doing things that need to be rushed but if I had to do it on every project I think my head would get a little loopy. Last semester I had an internship at an ad agency. The agency specialized in the field of attorneys. All the advertisements consisted of basically the same concept; there was not a lot of room for creativity. I did though learn a lot from that internship in the ways of doing concepts on a budget and on a time scale. I also got to sit in on client meetings and give my input on key projects. But after a while it was just the same boring thing. Now I have an internship at Opera Columbus, which I have really enjoyed so far.

How health, safety and hygiene legislation has impacted Essay

Introduction In this assignment, I shall be explaining how health, safety and hygiene legislation has impacted on selected two food retailers. I have selected Jimmy’s and Tesco. Jimmy’s  Jimmy’s World Grill & Bar is a chain of buffet restaurants in the United Kingdom. In 2012 it launched its flagship restaurant in The O2, London. The first Jimmy’s World Grill & Bar opened in 2003 and the chain now operates restaurants including Luton, Derby, Bath, Peterborough, Watford, and Wimbledon. Each restaurant offers cuisines from multiple international countries including Italy; China; India; Mexico; the US and the United Kingdom. The restaurants all offer â€Å"live cooking stations† where food is cooked to order in front of the customer. Tesco Tesco is the UK’s biggest food retailer offering a variety of services for food and non-food products to include insurance, entertainment, electrical goods and many more. It employs over 440,000 people around the world with over 280,000 in the UK. It has over 2,000 stores in the UK and a growing number of stores abroad in countries such as Thailand, China, Hungary and the United States. Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 is a regulation to make further provision for securing the health, safety and welfare of employees at work. This law applies to all workplace for controlling the keeping and use and preventing the unlawful achievement, possession and use of dangerous substances. Additionally, this act is for controlling certain emissions and also to help prevent employees from getting hurt. It has an impact on Tesco because they are responsible for creating a safe, healthy and productive workplace. Tesco provides training to their employees to assist staff in identifying, minimising and controlling hazards complying with all safety and health requirement applicable to their workplace. The employees of Tesco must wear protective cloth and safety equipment which are safe without risk to health. If anyone gets injured at Tesco, they can be eligible to be sued because it is Tesco responsibility to ensure that everyone is safe within the working environment. Jimmy’s provides a safe and healthy working environment and they meet their responsibilities. Jimmy’s manages risks to health and safety  to prevent accidents. Jimmy’s identifies, assesses and reduces risks to health and safety as it’s reasonable and practicable. Jimmy’s aims to prevent any accidents by training their employees to work safely. For example injuries by knifes/fire. The European Union The European Union ensures that control standards are established and adhered to as regards food hygiene, animal health and welfare, plant health and preventing the risk of pollution from external substances. Food hygiene is a way of preserving and preparing food which ensures that the food will be safe for people to eat. This regulation covers all stages of the productions, processing, distribution and placing on the market of food intended for human consumption. It affects Tesco because they are responsible to provide safe foods, implement procedures in order to prevent unsafe foods and withdraw and recall unsafe foods. For example, use of separate areas and equipment for handling and preparing raw and cooked foods and also use of appropriate cleaning chemicals. If the food is not well prepared, cooked or not washed or out of date then Tesco will be entitled to cheating/fraud as customers don’t get what they pay for. So Tesco has to make sure they provide good quality foods that meet customer’s needs and expectation. Jimmy’s measure key product and its quality attributes by focusing on ingredients and materials, as well as samples collected from the trade. They also try to become the ideal restaurant to meet company requirements and consumer expectations in the marketplace and they also ensure that they do the correct use of appropriate cleaning chemicals. Jimmy’s provides proper training to their employees to ensure hygiene in cooked and raw foods. Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulation 1981 Health and safety is a regulation and procedure intended to prevent accident or injury in workplace or public environment. For example, fire exit alarms are installed inside the building. Fire aid is the initial care given to a sick or injured person until full medical treatment can be accessed. It is mostly performed by a non-expert or sometime by an expert in case of an emergency. It has an impact on Tesco as they might need first aid anytime to their workers and every staff must report it to manager if any accident occurs and treatment is necessary. It is important for Tesco to record  details of any accident or injury in the book kept in the workplace and they also should report from any witness. Jimmy’s trains their employees for first aid certificate so that they can be available in their shifts to aid anyone who gets injured. Jimmy’s kitchen staffs are more likely to be injured by knifes /fire etc., so they make sure they have first aids stored in a safe place as well as fire extinguisher. Jimmy’s makes sure that they trained their staff and also ensure the checklist of daily presence of first aider is always signed in the beginning of the shift. Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations 1995 Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations 1995 is a law which puts duties on employers, the self-employed and people in control of work premises to report certain serious workplace accident, occupational diseases and specified dangerous occurrences. These reports enable the enforcing authorities to identify where and how risks arise and to investigate serious accidents. If someone has died or has been injured because of a work-related accident this may have to be reported. Not all accidents need to be reported, other than for certain gas incidents, a RIDDOR report is required only when: the accident is work-related and it results in an injury of a type which is reportable It has an impact on Tesco because they have a legal duty to report accidents or incidents occur in the workplace. This will help to find out where and how risks arise and also to investigate any serious accidents. Tesco staff helps and advices you to prevent actions in order to minimise injuries, accidents or incidents. Jimmy’s provides the information that enables the HSE to identify where and how risks happened in the workplace. Therefore, Jimmy’s makes sure that they maintain their information about accidents, injuries or incidents Control of Substances Hazardous to Health 2002 Control of Substances Hazardous to Health 2002 is a regulation that provides a framework to help protect people in the workplace against health risks from hazardous substances. The substances may be used directly in the work or may arise from the work such as cleaning chemicals. This law requires employers to make an appropriate assessment of the health risks created within the working environment and also to define the measures necessary to  protect people’s health. It has an impact on Tesco because they need to make sure prevent or minimise their workers’ exposure to hazardous substances. For example, Tesco must provide sufficient information in order to reduce harmful to health. Jimmy’s always provides suitable and sufficient information, instruction and training in order to follow the legislation. Food Safety Regulations 2005 Food Safety Regulations 2005 is a law that applies to all types of food, drink and ingredients. This regulation requires businesses to make sure food is supplied or sold in a hygienic way, identify food safety hazards and know which steps in the business activities are critical for food safety. Also, ensure safety controls are maintained and reviewed in the workplace. Tesco maintains the highest standard of hygiene by preventing any infection on food with bacteria or chemical. Furthermore, Tesco also keeps their foods in a correct temperature. If any equipment affected by food safety, employees must need to inform their manager. Tesco follows the regulation by not allowing their employees to smoke or drink alcohol in the workplace. If they found their employees smoking or drinking alcohol in the workplace, it will lead to disciplinary action and may result in dismissal. It has an impact on Jimmy’s because it is their regular practice to ensure that all their employees are keeping their workplace clean and tidy. By taking these active steps, they can ensure that everyone works in the workplace are confident in the health and safety. They also have different tools for different food items. For example for cutting chicken they use different knives and different cutting objects and plates, for cutting vegetables they have use different knives. Also these tools are colour coded so they know which one is for meats and which one is for vegetables. Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point is a procedure carried out for food safety and biological, chemical and physical hazards in production processes  that can cause the finished product to be unsafe and designs measurements to reduce these risks to a safe level. In addition, they need to ensure that everything they use or touch needs to be cleaned properly. It affects Tesco because they need to make sure that the foods produced are safe to eat. The foods need to be kept in a correct temperature level. Tesco ensures that these are safe for consumers to eat when they have passed through the entire food supply chain. Temperature is an important aspect of HACCP and improper storage temperature can makes foods unsafe to eat. Jimmy’s following this legislation by making sure that their drinks are safe for human consumption. Jimmy’s focus on the standardisation of raw materials and all the materials must be offered by the Jimmy’s suppliers. Examples of Post Modernism in Play and Worker Drone Essay

The importance of identifying the type of the movies shown in â€Å"Worker Drone† by Raju, S. (2010) and â€Å"Play† by Kaplan and Zimmerman (2010) are vital to the understanding of not only the plot, but also the common themes presented. For example, common themes in both movies were was the sense of paranoia, a showcase of intertextuality and an ambiguous endings. All three common themes make it clear that these movies are in fact postmodern films, despite the fact that there were also a few common themes also found supporting a modernist and existentialist sense. Who are the main characters? Which one is the protagonist? Which one is the antagonist? (Who are they, describe them briefly). A. Daisy : Gatsby loves her. He met her five years ago but didn’t marry her, now she is married with someone else and Gatsby wants to get back with her. Nick : The cousin of Daisy. Is used by Gatsby to connect with Daisy, and he is the one narrating the story. Jordon: Has a connection between Nick, Tom and Gatsby, and is a â€Å"side character† Protagonist: He is â€Å"Jay Gatsby†. His character is shown as the film progresses, and he is a mysterious man that throws parties every Saturday for what is later revealed to impress Daisy. He is a con man and has made money off of corruption. Antagonist: Tom (Daisy’s husband) is the antagonist in the film. He is originally just loving to his wife, but upon realizing Gatsbys intensions, plans to Gatsbys death Q. What is the essence of the problem or conflict that lies at the heart of this movie? A. Gatsby was unable to marry Daisy five years prior as he was too poor, and is now trying to win her back now that he is rich. The essence of the problem is also the decision by Daisy as to who she wants to spend the rest of her life with (Gatsby or her husband, Tom) Q. How are the attitudes and perspectives on life from that era reflected in the film? A. The language is very clearly an older, more British form of English with many British phrases presented (â€Å"Old Chap†). On top of that, the clothing, buildings, and cars are clearly old fashioned and dates back to the early 1900’s. Lastly, there is clearly a cultural shift between the main characters, and the lesser â€Å"poorer† peoples. This is clear by the lack of disregard to colored and underprivileged peoples in the early 1900’s Q. How is the story helped by camera angles? A. There are close shots during emotional scenes in them such as the only time when Gatsby was angry and when he was shot dead as well. There are shots with Dutch/angle to show confusion during the party scene when Nick met Gatsby for the first time. And when Tom’s lover, was struck by the car that was being driven by Daisy. There were also many long shots from above  to show wider detail like when there is a shot taken of the block/city. Q. How is the story helped by music? Provide several specific examples. A. The music was really relative to the scenes, and clearly emphasized the point playing. For example, there was soothing music during intimate scenes, and in contrast there was loud, fast paced music playing during the party scenes. Also, there was a clear difference in genre of music based on the ethnicity shown. For example more classical music was played during scenes with Daisy’s husband, and hip-hop during scenes with African Americans. Q. How is the story helped by costumes? A. Every scene costumes played a major role on portraying the setting, wither it be representing rich from poor, casual to formal, or night to day, as well as portraying the time this film was set in. The costumes were clearly early 1900s and was showcased by women wearing full dresses with hats, as well as Gatsby even holding a cane for show. An example of formal to casual is showcased by the Butlers wearing tuxedos in comparison to causal night clothes worn by Gatsby and other characters. Q. What is the overarching theme of the movie? Defend your choice. A. This film has one of the clearest themes I’ve even noticed, and it’s that wealth can’t buy you happiness. This is shown by the fact that Gatsby was able to throw rich extravagant parties, yet was unhappy because he was not with Daisy. Eventually he would actually die as a result of trying to get Daisy’s love back to marry him. Simply put, money cannot buy happiness Q. How do these production choices (camera angles, music, costumes) contribute to the overarching feeling that the movie is existentialist, modernist, or postmodernist? Choose one of these three styles and show how production choices helped to illuminate the literary style of the film. A. As mentioned previously, camera angles, music and costumes played a major role in the film. These helped present a Modernist style of movie by presenting costumes in the early 1900s sense. Around this time modernism began to grow, and you can tell by the modernist touches to the clothing. The music along with the costumes presents the Flappers ideology and really presented the modernist feel. Q. How is this like the poems, songs, or stories you have read in this unit? A. I found this movie had a variety of elements in it showcasing not only modernist views, but also existentialist and postmodernist ideas. Now of course these views have been presented in other poems, songs and stories throughout this unit, but it is the first time that all these elements are so clearly together. For example, modernist elements were found in the references to WW1 and Oxford U, while postmodernist elements were showcased in paranoia and suspension of other characters. In conclusion, I find this movie to have been a great blending of all themes, but having modernist as the center point idea. Q. How is this film different from everything else that you have read, heard, etc., in this unit? Make two specific connections. A. I found this film showcased many examples of several elements showcased in this unit (modernist, postmodern, existentialist, etc.). This made it more of an opinion choice based off the evidence as to what type of film was showcased. I did find this film to be much more enjoyable than the other films shown (practically because I knew about the story prior to) and made this film much more enjoyable/realistic to watch. Q. Is this movie mostly existentialist in outlook or mostly modernist in outlook or mostly postmodernist in its style? Why do you think that? A. I believe the movie was modernist for the most part because it had many of the elements required and did not have many postmodernist or existentialist elements throughout. Elements such as alliteration, such as the term â€Å"Old sport† were used for multiple reasons throughout the movie, which showcases a modernist form. Allusions/references were also very apparent, in such forms as references to WW1, Oxford U, etc. The theme of juxtaposition was shown as well when Daisy was deciding who to spend her life with. Task 3: Script The movie had many modern elements and concepts to it, and by adding the following monologue I hope to present the fact that it is such by using a  few theatrical devises used from that era (eg. â€Å"Strong visual images, Free-form poetry†). This scene begins the story as a reflection of the stories events told by Mr. Gatsby before the story its self is presented in full. â€Å"She was unique. A lovely girl for whom I loved from when I laid my eyes first upon her. You see, I was a fool. Her exquisiteness was so mind-blowing, so much in such that I became too nervous to make my presence available to her. We first met in Louisville in 1917, and we fell madly in love. Time changed, we grew apart. Yet here I found myself in the same country, same city and almost the same island yet I was a fool and I stayed reclusive.† â€Å"I don’t know how long it may have been, in fact I might not have ever reacquainted with her had it not been for a swell lad that moved next door named Nick. You see, every Saturday. Over and over again. Week after week. With my incredible wealth I hosted the grandest, most exciting parties that this Grand Island have ever seen, hoping, just hoping that this golden girl would show up.† â€Å"Today my heart is aching For a woman that’s far away I would give anything to hold him And any ransom I would pay† Once finished speaking, Mr. Gatsby finishes typing up what he’s said in story form. Accounting Information Systems 3-1. The text provides seven reasons why documenting AISs is important: (1) depicting how the system works, (2) training users, (3) designing new systems, (4) controlling systems development costs, (5) standardizing communication with others, (6) auditing, and (7) controlling end-user support costs. Additional reasons include: (1) to help evaluate the performance of system personnel, (2) to help evaluate the adequacy or efficiency of an existing system, and (3) to provide design specifications to outside vendors who might be proposing new systems. Accountants are interested in system documentation for all these reasons. For example, inadequate documentation makes it difficult to use an integrated accounting package effectively, design one for others to use, or audit a system intelligently. Flowcharts and similar systems documentation are also important to auditors. These charts can help auditors spot internal control weaknesses that are not apparent from prototypes or not obvious wh en observing a system in use. 3-2. Document flowcharts are a type of system flowchart. Whereas system flowcharts are process-oriented, document flowcharts focus on the flow of physical documents through the processing system. Document and system flowcharts are similar in that they use similar symbols in their construction. A few additional symbols, such as envelopes and hand trucks to depict movement of goods, are more likely to appear in document flowcharts than system flowcharts. But system flowcharts contain more detail about processing logic. Accountants can use data flow diagrams (DFDs) to depict the physical flows of data through an AIS (like document flowcharts), or the logical flow of data through an AIS (like system flowcharts). Like document or system flowcharts, their main objective is to document data flows in an orderly, graphic, and easily-understood format. But DFDs use fewer symbols than either document or system flowcharts, and do not require columns (like document flowcharts). Program flowcharts are really the lowest level of system flowcharts because they outline the logic sequence for a particular application program. Thus, they are more used by programmers and system analysts than by accountants and auditors. Still, auditors will need to understand these program flowcharts when looking at program logic and program controls. Program flowcharts use many of the same symbols found in system flowcharts, but also use some special ones such as the decision symbol. 3-3. A document flowchart is a pictorial representation of the physical data flow through the various departments of a business. A document flowchart is used in designing or evaluating an accounting information system. 1. A systems analyst uses it when evaluating a system to see if each department is receiving the necessary data and that unnecessary data are not transferred. 2. A system designer uses it when there is interest in improving or replacing an existing system. 3. A computer p rogrammer can use a document flowchart when preparing system flowcharts. 4. An auditor uses it to help define, follow, and evaluate an audit trail. 5. An internal data security expert uses it to indicate weaknesses in internal control and data control. 3-4. They also control the National Human Trafficking Resource Centre (NHTRC) which is the countries hotline for human trafficking. Now, the majority of the modern world (with perhaps the exclusion of some Middle Eastern sects) view the deliberate killing of another human being as non-socially acceptable, and therefore legally wrong. Beginning in the backwoods of the Carolina’s, young Andrew Jackson was born to a couple from Northern Ireland that migrated here during a time of social and economic turmoil. Arriving in the late 1760’s, Jackson explored the prospective rolling countryside with the uncontrolled freedom that encouraged his wild behavior. By the age of fourteen, Jackson had lost his brothers and both parents, leaving a young troubled boy to fend for himself in the turbulent south. Evidently, Jackson’s rebellious attitude brought him nowhere in school. The local schoolmaster barley taught him to read or write, but he expressed himself directly. Even into his presidency his advisors had to revise his public writings due to his horrid grammar and spelling. Throughout the beginning of the book, Curtis extensively relates Andrew’s early encounters to his future motivations in personal and political thought. Andrew’s break came at the age of seventeen when he landed a job with a lawyer to practice law. Soon Andrew had a legitimate chance in frontier diplomacy. In 1784 he was involved in the Spanish Conspiracy. In this conflict the colonists were looking for a bold, reactionary person to represent them. Andrew took to this and forcefully went after the Indians. Obviously, his rashness toward the Indians was rooted in his own struggles with authority as a child. † They were doubly evil, reminding him of a past he was trying to forget and threatening a future he was trying to achieve. The Indian was a fit target for wrath.†(23) Curtis’ style emphasizes that Jackson was relating the unconstrained conditions of the frontier to his own unconstrained behaviors. As a result, Jackson wanted to suppress this feeling and took out his angers on the Indians. Finally in 1796, Jackson’s political chieftain, William Blount, selected the young judge advocate of the Davidson County Militia. After two years he  replaced Blount’s seat in the senate. Senator Jackson sat in office for about a year before he realized that his brash public speaking skills and high temper could not contest with the polemical persuasion the other Senators possessed. Once again Jackson returned to the profitable judgeship that the Blount regime offered. He served giving six years of crude but fair justice as a prominent judge. In 1806, Jackson once again revealed his reckless and impulsive behavior when he challenged a fellow opponent to a duel. Jackson exercised his boldness after allowing the sharpshooter take the first shot. Wounded, he immediately raised his gun and killed the other man. Curtis showed that this level of bravery would be his greatest alibi in future encounters. With the return of peace in 1815 allowed for more productive use of transportation. Consequently, the Market Revolution was born, as well as a time for political change. The old regimes were being taken over by new ones that represented a different generation of Americans. The majority favored Americans that were born and raised in the light of the Revolution. Andrew Jackson was and acted like that kind of person. His unstable past caught the admiration of the working class as well as the slave owners, but the old political parties saw Jackson as a frantic militiaman. He disappointed those † whose minds were prepared to see me with a Tomahawk in one hand and a scalping knife in the other.†(82) These reactions concerned Jackson and inspired him to seek a different course of action. Curtis showed, † the candidate desperately wanted such vindication.†(82) From 1828 to 1836 Jackson served the presidency with the same motivation that got him there. Tragedy struck again with the death of his wife, a serious illness, and the Eaton affairs. In 1831 allegations from the banks were swarming Jackson. The pressure of presidency was taking its toll. The fight with the Indians was showing progress, but the south was deteriorating. Jackson soon elected a new cabinet that contained federalists and Bank members. He even went to the extent in terminating his administration. Later in his retirement, he claimed,† It was the sovereign people that†¦.enabled me to terminate my administration so satisfactorily.†(179) This partisan  split showed Jackson’s trust in the people. Thus, his vindication was cured by the endorsement of the American citizen. For most he showed that the poor and unfortunate individuals could rise to the top, but he didn’t realize the human costs of economic expansion. During this time period Curtis presents Jackson as a resilient and self-promoting individual. However, there were just as important issues that should have been addressed besides the Market Revolution, issues with state banks, and Jackson fulfilling his need to clear his name from criticism. For instance, minorities, primarily blacks, didn’t have the slightest chance in rising to the point to make social change. The slaves were used as economic fuel to ignite the Market Revolution. I think this book did address Andrew Jackson as a genius in promoting change, but lacked in promoting his moral character and I would not recommend it. It seemed to me, Curtis represented him as an American hero more than a dynamic political figure. Andrew Jackson was the result of the troubled lives Americans lived during the Revolutionary period. The emotions of those people were the catalyst in Andrew Jackson’s search for vindication.
